Ouya will ship first dev kits for $99 Android gaming console in ...

The developers of the Ouya $99 video game console are almost ready to start shipping the first units to developers. The developer consoles will leave the factory on December 28th, and could start arriving in developers? hands a few days later.

Initially the only folks that are getting these gaming systems will be people who pledged $699 or more for a dev kit during the Ouya?s Kickstarter campaign. Final production units aren?t scheduled to ship until March or later.

Ouya

The Ouya is a tiny video game console featuring an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, Google Android software with a custom user interface (and a custom game store), and a wireless game controller.

If you didn?t have $699 to spend, but backed the project at a lower level, Ouya systems should start shipping in March, 2013. Customers that pre-order from the Ouya website now that the Kickstarter campaign is over can expect devices to arrive in April

That?s assuming everything stays on schedule, but so far the company has been keeping its promises. The initial developer consoles always had an estimated ship date of December.

While the idea of a cheap, hackable video game console that can also be used as an inexpensive media center is pretty cool, the hardware might look a bit dated by the time the product is widely available.

Nobody expects new PlayStation, Xbox, or Wii hardware every year, but mobile chip makers put out newer, faster processors once or twice a year. We?re already starting to see phones and tablets with speedy processors like the Samsung Exynos 5250 ARM Cortex-A15 chip or Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 chip which make NVIDIA?s Tegra 3 chip look positively sluggish.

Still, if enough Ouya devices hit the streets, it could pose a popular platform for developers, and as Nintendo has shown time and again, you don?t necessarily need the fastest hardware to compete in the video game world. You just need to attract developers who know how to make games that are fun to play.

Chemists invent powerful toolkit, accelerating creation of potential new drugs

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? Scientists at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) have invented a set of chemical tools that is radically simplifying the creation of potential new drug compounds.

Pharmaceutical chemists frequently seek to generate dozens or even hundreds of variations of a given compound to see which works best. The new toolkit -- described in the Nov. 28, 2012 issue of the journal Nature -- makes this process easier and cheaper, enabling previously time- and cost-prohibitive chemical modifications. This fundamental innovation is already being adopted by drug companies and is expected to speed the development of new compounds in other industries as well.

"Feedback from companies that have started to use this toolkit indicates that it solves a real problem for them by boosting their chemists' productivity and by expanding the realm of compounds that they can feasibly generate," said Phil S. Baran, PhD, a professor in the Department of Chemistry and a member of the Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology at TSRI who led the work.

Robert Lees, PhD, of the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of General Medical Sciences, which partially funded the work, added, "Methods to predictably, selectively and efficiently functionalize a given C-H site are difficult to invent but highly significant for developing new therapeutic and diagnostic agents, and studying biomolecules. Practical chemistry for introducing fluorine atoms into organic compounds is also an important current need in medicinal chemistry. The new reagents developed by Professor Baran address both goals, and they will likely be widely utilized in both academic and industrial laboratories."

A Common and Useful Structure

The toolkit is a set of newly invented chemicals and methods for attaching functional groups of molecules to a series of common chemical structures known as nitrogen-containing heterocycles -- flat molecules with rings made of carbon atoms and at least one nitrogen atom. Though their name might seem esoteric, these structures are common in both natural and synthetic chemicals, and they are found in most drugs that are taken in pill form.

"Ironically, the properties that make nitrogen-containing structures so useful in medicines are what also make them so hard to modify," said Baran. The resistance of nitrogen heterocycles to modification by traditional techniques has slowed drug discovery and has put many potential modifications out of reach.

But Baran envisioned a different scenario. "The ideal for discovery chemists would be a method that works in water, in an open flask, with procedures that are simple enough to be automated," he said.

A few years ago Baran began to glimpse the possibility of achieving such a method. His lab had just succeeded in synthesizing a complex natural nitrogen heterocycle, palau'amine, a toxin made by sea sponges in the Western Pacific that has shown anticancer, antibacterial and antifungal pharmaceutical promise. "As we developed an understanding of how that compound reacts, we recognized that it might help us solve this larger problem that discovery chemists face," he said.

The nitrogen atoms in heterocycles are what make them so tricky to handle. Traditional methods of modification typically aim to block their influence before the addition of any modifying molecules, but this approach can be cumbersome and expensive. The experience with palau'amine, which features an extremely challenging nine nitrogen atoms per molecule, led Baran and his team to try to find chemical reagents -- tools, in effect -- that would modify heterocycles directly.

A More Direct Route

Direct methods already had existed, but they often require extreme temperatures as well as expensive and hazardous reagents. During 2010 and 2011, Baran's lab experimented with several comparatively safe chemical reagents that can work in mild conditions to make commonly desired heterocycle modifications, such as the addition of a difluoromethyl group. One of these new reagents, a zinc dialkylsulfinate salt (DFMS) designed to transfer the difluoromethyl group, turned out to work particularly well. "We quickly realized that we might be able to make related zinc sulfinate salts that would attach other functional groups to heterocycles," Baran said.

In the new report in Nature, Baran and his colleagues describe an initial toolkit consisting of ten of these zinc-based salts, each of which attaches a different functional group to a heterocycle framework. "We selected these groups because they are commonly used by medicinal chemists," said Fionn O'Hara, PhD, a postdoctoral researcher in the Baran laboratory who was a first author of the new report with postdoctoral researcher Yuta Fujiwara, PhD, and technician Janice A. Dixon.

"In many cases, chemists will be able to use these reagents sequentially to make more than one modification to a starting compound," noted Fujiwara. The groups that can be attached with the new reagents include trifluoromethyl, difluoromethyl, trifluoroethyl, monofluoromethyl, isopropyl and triethylene glycol monomethyl ether.

To demonstrate the ability of the reagents to work in biological media, Baran's team used them to difluoromethylate or trifluoromethylate heterocycles in a solution of cell lysate -- the contents of cells -- as well as to serve as a buffer medium, Tris, commonly used in lab-dish tests. To underscore the general robustness of the reagents, the team even carried out such modifications in a paper cup containing Oolong tea.

Baran's laboratory collaborated in the research with scientists from the pharmaceutical company Pfizer Inc. "They provided insight into the types of compounds that would be valuable, assistance with optimization, and, most importantly, testing of the chemistry in their drug discovery laboratories, where it is meant to be used," Baran said.

The first of the zinc sulfinate salts, DFMS, now also known as Baran difluoromethylation reagent, is already being manufactured in bulk and marketed by chemical suppliers, including Sigma-Aldrich Corporation. "There has been a lot of demand for that product from the first day we listed it, which is very rare," said Troy Ryba, manager of academic chemistry strategy at the firm Sigma-Aldrich.

Baran currently is working to expand his lab's initial toolkit to provide more heterocycle-modifying choices to chemists in the pharmaceutical industry and beyond. "We have a whole slew of new reagents in the pipeline," he said.

In addition to Baran, O'Hara, Fujiwara and Dixon, authors of the paper, "Practical, innate C-H functionalization of heterocycles" are Neal Sach and Michael R. Collins of Pfizer; and Erik Daa Funder, Darryl D. Dixon, Rodrigo A. Rodriguez, Ryan D. Baxter, Bart Herle and Yoshihiro Ishihara, of the TSRI Department of Chemistry.

Funding for the research was provided in part by a National Institute of General Medical Sciences grant (GM-073949) and by Pfizer Inc.

(AP) ? Free-agent outfielder B.J. Upton and the Atlanta Braves have agreed to a $75.25 million, five-year contract, a person familiar with the deal said Wednesday night.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been completed. It is expected to be announced Thursday once Upton passes his physical.

Upton's deal would be the biggest free-agent contract of the offseason so far and the largest in Braves history.

The 28-year-old Upton hit .246 with 28 homers, 78 RBIs and 31 stolen bases for Tampa Bay last season. He will replace free agent Michael Bourn as the Braves' center fielder and provide a needed right-handed power bat for the lineup.

Upton made his debut with Tampa Bay in 2004. His first full season was 2007, when he hit a career-best .300 with 24 homers and 22 stolen bases.

The speedy outfielder's home run totals have increased in each of the last three seasons, but he has hit below .250 with more than 150 strikeouts in four straight years.

Bourn was the Braves' leadoff hitter, but Upton is not expected to fill that role. The Braves might shop for a left fielder to hit leadoff, with Martin Prado expected to move from the outfield to third base following Chipper Jones' retirement.

Young shortstop Andrelton Simmons, who hit .289 with a .335 on-base percentage as a rookie, could be an option to bat leadoff. Prado was the normal No. 2 hitter.

The deal with Upton comes only five days before the start of baseball's winter meetings in Nashville, Tenn.

Upton is an expensive addition, but the big move is not a surprise.

General manager Frank Wren said after the season he would have funds available to make a notable offseason acquisition. Jones had a $14 million base salary last season and Bourn's was $6,845,000.

Wren said he entered the offseason with "a pretty narrow focus" because he only had to replace Bourn and Jones.

"Beyond that, our club is pretty solid," Wren said after the Braves' wild-card playoff loss to St. Louis.

Upton adds to what Wren said is a "dynamic young core" of players. He will join first baseman Freddie Freeman, right fielder Jason Heyward, catcher Brian McCann and second baseman Dan Uggla as power hitters.

McCann's status for the start of the season is uncertain. He had surgery on his right shoulder in October. The rehabilitation could carry into the first month of the season.

Gerald Laird signed a two-year, $3 million deal with Atlanta earlier this month to serve as McCann's backup. Laird, who hit .282 with AL champion Detroit, could open the season as the starter if McCann is not ready.

Creating A Family Recipe Scrapbook | Fulton Tea Party Home - Ike ...

I can not tell you how many times I?ve called my mom and said ?mom I just have to have your recipe for such and such?. It?s been a slow accumulation of recipes, but she chuckles each time I realize I need yet another recipe from her.

Now that I have an adult daughter of my own I really wanted to pass the recipes on to her also. Many of these recipes she?s been eating since she was old enough for solids. My daughter also has a recipe book from her aunt on her dad?s side.

Recipe scrapbooks can be given to aunts, uncles, cousins, children etc. A 6?6 scrapbook works wonderfully. They are large enough to hold a 3?5 index card. You can also use an 8?8 scrapbook and have the recipes on paper, instead of index cards.

I think it?s a great mix to combine photos and recipes. For example, a group family photo at the beginning of the album is a great way to start off the album. If you?ve asked for recipes from multiple family members, put a photo of the recipe submitter on one page and the recipe on the opposite page.

It?s also a great help to have a shopping list. Consider the actual recipe on one page and a shopping list on the opposite page. I very often take a recipe to the market with me and shop off the recipe page. By creating the list, the recipe book holder just needs to remove the shopping list page and take it to the market.

Another idea is to create a bit of history with your recipes. If you?ve had several family members contribute recipes, consider having the recipe on page, photos on one page and a bit of information on the author on a 3rd page. Most scrapbooks are very expandable, so there is room for many pages in one album.

All of my cookbooks have measurement charts and converters in them, so when making a recipe album, it?s great to add this information to either the back or the front.

Recipe albums are a great gift for both the new bride, especially if the gift comes from her husband?s family with recipes for all of the dishes he grew up with and for the college graduate setting up their first home.

Google apps package updated today, just in time for the new AOSP ROMs

AOSP

The folks who do this sort of thing have updated the Google Apps package today, handing you a shiny new flashable to go with that 4.1.2 AOSP ROM you're about to download.

Technically a grey area, Google doesn't release their closed source applications for redistribution. Instead, they get sucked out of a phone running the current version, and blood, sweat, and scripts are used to create a package that gives you all the Googley services you would expect from an Android phone.

Yesterday's 4.1.2 updates didn't bring about any new versions of the Gapps, so we imagine this update is more along the lines of streamlining and enhancing the installation process -- the biggest step in the whole process. Grab em from the source link below so you have them the next time you need them.

Timing Belt Automotive Repair Eli Manning Jersey Tips | My Six ...

One particular with the most overlooked elements of an automobile, and 1 of the most typical automotive repairs could be the timing belt. Your car?s timing belt may look like an accessory, however the fact is the fact that if it fails, your vehicle will all of a sudden halt, and, if you?re fortunate, you will find oneself stranded around the side in the road waiting for any tow truck.

Timing belts are generally produced of nylon reinforced rubber, with square teeth positioned on the inside surface. Even though you drive, the belt transfers the rotation in the crankshaft the camshaft, which in turn activates the valves that offer air and fuel to the cylinders and expel combustion gases Eli Manning Jersey to the exhaust system.

Inside your car, the valves and pistons move up and down swiftly, and most engines are not constructed to let clearance amongst a valve that is down along with a piston that?s up and this is in which the timing belt comes in, considering that it truly is what keeps the valves and pistons for colliding.

If your timing belt fails, and a collision occurs, the harm to the cylinder head, cylinder walls, valves, and pistons can be substantial, and pricey, as well.

Throughout an automotive repair, the timing belt is often overlooked, considering that Eli Manning Jersey these are generally protected by a cover, along with a speedy visual inspection isn?t a possibility.Eli Manning Jersey Over the previous several years, cars happen to be constructed to count on a timing chain as opposed to a belt.

Even though they are normally lengthier lasting, they operate on essentially exactly the same principal, and demand replacement and upkeep, which varies by auto. Typically, you can count on to get to change your timing belt or chain each 60,000 to 90,000 miles.

Replacing a timing belt or chain calls for the removal of the engine drive belt, the part Eli Manning Jersey accountable for operating the alternator, water pump, energy steering pump, and air conditioner.

Once you pay a visit to your mechanic, be sure to ask them about how often the timing belt or chain on your auto should be replaced. Your vehicle?s owners manual will also be capable of supply recommendations as to timing belt replacement and upkeep.

Don?t forget, the care you take of your car right now guarantees its continued well being, along with your safety although around the road. Automotive repair difficulties, if caught early, are much less pricey and Eli Manning Jersey require much less time to repair than those who are overlooked in the first stages. Carrying out an excellent job with preliminary care and upkeep can genuinely assist your automobile to go along way.

Using cigarettes does not need to always be destructive | ArticlePDQ ...

Anyone comes with thoughts and opinions with regards to smokes. Regardless of if you happen to a new smoke enthusiast and / or you happen to be a man or woman, who have rarely tested to help you smoking a fabulous cig, you?ve kept ones own opinions to cigarettes. Numerous would likely state that it can be a horrible along with definitely not needed aspect in the modern world, whilst others figure out the demand designed for smokes.

Its very clear the fact that using tobacco can be described as quite poor desire increasing numbers of consumers are combating. A lot of smokers may truly love to kick the habit of his or her?s smoking cigarettes, however it?s actually a very difficult and even hard mission to undertake, given that the depend on for pure nicotine is oftentimes larger than typically the aspiration connected with laying off. A few would likely suggest that it can be a little situation connected with robustness on one?s will, whilst others certainly fully understand not to mention allows the issue that men and women feel right after they make sure to cease his or her?s smokes routine.

Modern products in addition to researching have realized an exciting new technique of using tobacco that may be able to experience a far healthier cigarette smoke compared to the styles that happen to be by now already in the market. This unique solution is addressed as some sort of E-cigaret, which happens to be a powerful elektronisk cigarette which usually generally simulates all the smokes feel we get hold of as a result of standard smokes. The actual main difference is without a doubt the fact that contaminated along with damaging stuffs that are generally an important part of an absolute cigarette smoking are easily deleted from this E-Cigaretten. Likewise, you might not have access to all the variants of polices of which continue to persist in a good many general population sites today, just where some think it?s more or less improbable as a person with the enormous parts including a powerful terminal and / or some sort of place of work. In addition there are increasingly landlords which will simply just restrict visitors to cigarette smoke of their apartment rentals, of which ensure the possibility that smokes is usually an feature which may be slowly but surely becoming more challenging together with more challenging for you to do.

A powerful E-cigaret may also hinder most people by gaining cancer tumor, simply because ones lounges isn?t going to be filled up through each of the contaminated stuffs that you will get on a standard smoking, as you may ought to light the item up by means of fire place. A particular E-cigaret might generally put out a lot of humid in standard water, which is to be evaporated speedily following a launching. That is a health boosting style of nicotine, whilst you will certainly always get a requirement for pure nicotine attained, eventhough it is often a alternatively fraudulent knowledge. Your physical structure cannot notice this approach. Likewise, the elektronisk cigarette is additionally a whole lot more affordable as opposed to the standard varieties, when you stay away from the major property taxes which were expanding over the standard cigarette smoking.

Normally, E-Cigaretten is an excellent solution for the purpose of smokers, just who shouldn?t have the capacity to stop his or her?s tobacco use, still who wants to develop into much better. Surely, a powerful E-cigaret isn?t really the identical like standard smoking, nevertheless it is a popular alternative if you?d like to seek to stage over the job involving smokes. Even if, an effective way of going health boosting is to give up all the cigarette smoking thoroughly.

The special invention of the e-cigaretter made the public quite aware of their health as it filters the nicotine and then hit the lungs that are of distinct flavors.

Bomb in Pakistan kills 2 Shiites, injures 35

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) ? Police say a bomb exploded at a Shiite religious procession in northwest Pakistan, killing at least two people and injuring some 35 others.

Police official Javed Khan says the bomb exploded Sunday in the city of Dera Ismail Khan. The city is located near the South Waziristan tribal region where a similar bombing Saturday killed seven and wounded 30.

Shiite Muslims are observing Ashoura, a feast that commemorates the seventh century death of Imam Hussein, the Prophet Muhammad's grandson. The Sunni-Shiite schism over the heir to Muhammad dates back to that time, and Sunni extremists often target Shiites mourners during the season.

Pakistan has suspended mobile phone service in major cities during Ashoura to prevent such bombings, which often use cellphones as detonators.

Defeated Sierra Leone opposition says election flawed

FREETOWN (Reuters) - Sierra Leone's main opposition party on Saturday attacked the credibility of a poll that saw incumbent President Ernest Bai Koroma elected to a second term in an outright victory.

The dispute risks tarnishing a vote deemed free and fair by observers and that many hope will help pave the way for an economic revival of the war-scarred West African nation.

Koroma's main challenger Julius Maada Bio, a former military junta leader, said "systemic and widespread irregularities, malpractices and injustices ... undermined the credibility of the results."

While the SLPP stopped short of rejecting the results outright, a top party official said the chances it would accept its defeat when the party's leadership meets on Tuesday were slim.

"It's very unlikely. Our membership are very strong-hearted about it," the SLPP's national secretary general Banja Tejan-Sie told Reuters.

While analysts predicted ethnic loyalties would make it hard to secure the 55 percent of votes required for a first round victory in the November 15 election, Koroma and his All People's Congress party won outright with 58.7 percent.

Bio garnered 37.4 percent of votes in a high turnout for the election, the third national poll since the end of a 1991-2002 civil war that made Sierra Leone notorious as a "blood diamonds" battleground for rebels and child soldiers.

At stake was the job of overseeing billions of dollars of investment in a natural resources boom with the potential to lift the gold, oil and iron-rich country from poverty.

Iron-ore shipments by British companies African Minerals and London Mining are expected to help the economy achieve 20 percent growth this year, below original forecasts of more than 50 percent, but still one of the highest growth rates on the planet.

While a large European Union observer mission said the advantage of incumbency meant the electoral playing field was skewed in favour of Koroma, it and other observers called the process free and fair.

More than 9,000 polling stations catered to the country of 5.5 million voters on election day.

In a statement released before the results on Friday, electoral commission chief Christiania Thorpe said recounts took place in 173 polling stations, however over-voting was only found to have occurred in five.

"It is mathematically impossible for the number of ballots in the ballot boxes to be recounted to impact the outcome of the presidential election," the statement read.

Koroma's spokesman Unisa Sesay said on Saturday that the poll result was credible and the NEC had thoroughly investigated the SLPP's complaints.

"It's not only Sierra Leoneans who are saying it," he said. "Don't forget that these are the elections that have been most comprehensively observed for a very long time."

Outrage in Michigan ? Monroe County set to kill pet dogs for ...

Ernest Dempsey ? Killing Ace wasn?t the end of it; Michigan is doing it again as Monroe County is all set to put to death an entire family of boxer dogs because one of them bit a girl who allegedly trespassed the owner?s property while he was away. While the one, a female dog named Brooklyn, did bite the teenage girl, the other three living as part of the family have been arrested and kept imprisoned for 7 months under the label ?dangerous? without any reason and are now close to be killed by the animal control.

The story of the four boxers has been posted on the dogs? Facebook page and owner Timothy Iocoangeli, 48, has been struggling all around to save his dogs from open victimization at the hands of animal control and the courts ? all of whom have refused to give the dogs a chance at fair trial in light of evidence and then decide about them.

As he describes in the facebook post, when Timothy Iocoangeli was way on April 24 this year, Brooklyn bit a teenage girl accompanied by a another teenager, both friends of Iocoangeli?s son; according to Iocoangeli, one of these visitors opened the gate to the house while visiting his son but without caring for the presence of dogs in the house. The girl was bitten bad by Brooklyn because, as Iocoangeli explains this female dog had five of her 2-month-old puppies in her care at the house.

The animal control responded by seizing all dogs without bothering which or any of them were dangerous, including the puppy. To facilitate this injustice, media at once called the incident as attack by a? pack of vicious dogs? even though no assessment was done by anyone of the dogs. Interestingly, the channel reporter tells that the girl was reportedly ?inside the house? when she was attacked. Why would a teenage girl go inside the house without being accompanied by the owner or his son? Nobody has been bothered with this question while it remains at the core of the entire case.

In declaring Iocoangeli?s boxers dangerous, the animal control and judges at the hearings entirely ignored the city?s own law which states that a dog cannot be considered dangerous if it attacks in protecting its property against strangers. In other words, biting a trespasser does not prove a dog dangerous. And even if one dog is prove dangerous ? which will surely be not easy to prove objectively because of the defense reason ? why do other dogs have to be killed in absence of any evidence of any biting or mauling?

As the owner tells, an officer at the animal control offered her release of the dogs if he could pay $3000 within a week. But when he excused for not being able to afford it, the dogs were kept in the pound and the owner or his family was not allowed to visit them. Imprisoned for no crime, kept isolated from family, these dogs have been so recklessly victimized by the city that the ideal of justice has been strangled well before putting the dogs down. And if that was not enough, Timothy Iocoangeli was given a choice by the prosecution to either give up on all dogs or else go to jail. Iocoangeli says he turned himself in instead of letting his dogs be euthanized by his agreement. While he was released on bail, he still faces jail time for up to 4 years on charges of keeping ?dangerous animals? in the house while his dogs can be put to death any time by the animal control.

One act of carelessness by visiting teenagers has literally destroyed the happy life of a man who even washed cars to raise money for saving his beloved family pets. Monroe County animal control and city authorities chose to victimize innocent animals and a man who refused to accept their twisting of their own rules for a show of efficiency and mock justice. Can such an outrage be acceptable in country which is leading the world in matters of rights and justice? Is it not an open act of judicial murder? Allowing such abuse of authority can no doubt lead to future victimization of civilians in the name of management and control.

To raise a voice against the euthanasia possibly planned for some time the coming week, contact the Monroe County Animal Control at their website or 911 S Raisinville Rd, Monroe, MI 48161 (phone 734-240-3125). To contact the mayor?s office, call?Mayor?s office at 734-384-9144 (http://www.ci.monroe.mi.us/mayor_1.cfm).

Eight dead, human remains found in northern Mexico

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexican authorities discovered the bodies of eight men and the remains of others in the northern state of Chihuahua over the weekend, the local government said on Sunday.

The eight victims, who were aged 30-35, were found by a road roughly 50 miles south of the city of Chihuahua. The victims had been tortured and shot in the head, a spokesman for the state government said.

State prosecutors also found a grave containing the remains of men who died roughly two years ago in the desert area just south of the city of Ciudad Juarez, near the U.S. border.

Bones and clothing of the victims were discovered during a search of the area conducted on Friday and Saturday, according to a government statement. Authorities will work on determining the number of dead, cause and time of death, and identities of the victims, the statement said.

Chihuahua has been one of the Mexican states hardest hit by violence stemming from turf wars between drug cartels and their clashes with security forces.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon, who steps down at the end of the month, launched a six-year offensive against the cartels that led to a spike in violent crime. About 60,000 people have died in drug-related violence during his term.

President-elect Enrique Pena Nieto, who takes office on December 1, says his priority will be to reduce violence and focus first on tackling crimes like extortion and kidnapping.

When conservation goes genomics: Finding needles in a haystack

Thursday, November 22, 2012

Studying the genetic variability of endangered species is becoming increasingly necessary for species conservation and monitoring. But, endangered species are difficult to observe and sample, and typically harbour very limited genetic diversity. Until now, the process of finding genetic markers was time consuming and quite expensive. These obstacles make the collection of genetic data from endangered animals a difficult task to fulfill. A research team led by Loun?s Chikhi, group leader at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ci?ncia (IGC) and CNRS researcher, has now contributed to change the odds when looking for diversity. Taking advantage of cutting edge DNA sequencing methodology and the collaborations with the Sabah Wildlife Department in Malaysia, Rachel O'Neill's laboratory and a private company, they were able to identify the genetic markers for the Bornean elephant, an endangered species, using blood from very few animals. The results showed that Bornean elephants have very low genetic variability that can impact on their survival to a threatened habitat, but that variable genetic markers can still be identified. The study now published in the journal PLOS ONE*, besides contributing to the conservation of the Bornean elephant, opens new avenues for the conservation of other endangered species.

The Bornean elephant is a unique subspecies of the Asian elephant, with a quite distinct morphology and behavior. They are generally smaller than other elephants, with straight tusks and a long tail. Currently, there are around 2000 individuals, located only in the North of Borneo. It remains unknown how this population of elephants evolved to become so different and why its distribution is so restricted.

Despite being one of the highest priority populations for Asian elephant conservation, until now there were limited genetic tools available to study its genetic variability and none that had been specifically designed for this species. Now, in the work conducted by Reeta Sharma, a Post-Doctoral fellow in Loun?s Chikhi's group, for the first time DNA sequences that characterize the genome of the Bornean elephants, called genetic markers, were identified. The research team used two different DNA sequencing technologies that are fast and increasingly cheaper. This kind of technology has been used for common laboratory species such as mice and fruit-flies, but they are only now starting to be used on endangered and "non-model" species.

Until now, in order to determine whether the species still harboured sufficient genetic diversity it was necessary to look through huge regions of the genome, using classical genetics methodologies, or use markers developed for other species, with varying levels of success. This approach can become unsustainable for the endangered species, whose numbers have gone bellow a certain size for long time. The only study that previously had tried to analyse Bornean elephants, using genetic markers developed for other Asian elephants had found nearly no genetic diversity. The work now developed demonstrates that if the methodology can be applied to the Bornean elephant, it should be possible to find the needles we need, and not get stuck with the hay, i.e., to find variable genetic markers in many other species.

The DNA analysis done resulted from blood samples collected only from seven Bornean elephants from the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park (Sabah, Malaysia) and from Chendra, the star elephant of Oregon zoo (Portland, USA). But, the research team is confident that these DNA sequencing methods can be used to type genetically other biological samples, such as hair or faeces, easier to obtain from wild animals, even though blood or tissue samples are still necessary to identify the markers during the first steps.

Reeta Sharma, first author of this work, says: 'The methodology applied to identify the genetic markers for the Bornean elephant can be used in the future for studies on the genetic variability of other species or populations facing the risk of extinction.'

The Bornean elephants live in an environment where natural habitats disappear quickly, due to oil palm plantations and populations get isolated from each other. Having access to variable genetic markers will be crucial to identify populations that are isolated and genetically depauperate, and monitor them in the future.

The origin of these elephants in Borneo raises controversy that has been long discussed. The only study done on the basis of genetic data concluded that they had been present in Borneo for more than 300,000 years. This theory does not satisfy all researchers as there is lack of elephant fossils in Borneo to support it. Another theory is that the sultan of Java sent Javan elephants as a gift to the sultan of Sulu, who would have introduced them to Borneo.Lounes Chikhi suggests: 'The new genetic markers that we found may also allow us to unravel the mystery of the origin of these elephants in Borneo, and perhaps reconstruct part of their demographic history. This is very exciting '.

Jets' Tebow reveals he has 2 broken ribs

(AP) ? Tim Tebow stood on the sideline with a cap on and his hands in his pockets as Jets fans chanted his name.

They wanted to see the backup quarterback in a 49-19 blowout loss to New England on Thursday night. Turns out, there was little chance Tebow would see a snap.

Tebow, who didn't play at all, revealed after the game that he broke two ribs in the Jets' loss at Seattle two weeks ago.

"They need a little time to get better," Tebow said, adding that his breathing has been affected by the injury.

He was listed as questionable for the game with a rib ailment, but fully practiced Wednesday. Coach Rex Ryan had reservations about making Tebow active, deciding to use him only "if we absolutely had to have him," and leaving third-stringer Greg McElroy inactive.

"I appreciate his concern," Tebow said. "I had to do a little bit of talking just to dress, but I just want to be there for my teammates in case they needed me in an emergency situation."

Tebow has had a limited role in the Jets' offense this season after being acquired from the Denver Broncos in March. He was expected to add a dynamic element to the offense, particularly in the wildcat package, but he is averaging only about seven plays on offense.

He is playing regularly as the personal punt protector on special teams, but thinks the injury occurred on an offensive play against the Seahawks.

"I didn't really know," he said. "I just kept playing and started to feel it later on."

He played in the Jets' win at St. Louis on Sunday, but had an MRI exam Monday that revealed the extent of the injury.

Tebow has been practicing, but isn't certain how long he will be hindered by the injury. He hopes to be healthy enough to play in the Jets' next game against Arizona on Dec. 2.

"I was ready to go if they needed me," he said. "Obviously, it wasn't ideal. I just wanted to be there for my teammates and do whatever I can to help."

Ryan said the injury appeared to get "progressively worse" as the week went on and noticed his breathing sounded different.

"I was standing there and I was like, 'I'm not going to play this kid,'" Ryan said. "I wouldn't play my son in that kind of situation. To Tim's credit, he wanted to be there for his team."

(AP) ? The producers of "The Price is Right" owe a former model on the show more than $7.7 million in punitive damages for discriminating against her after a pregnancy, a jury determined Wednesday.

The judgment came one day after the panel determined the game show's producers discriminated against Brandi Cochran. They awarded her nearly $777,000 in actual damages.

Cochran, 41, said she was rejected when she tried to return to work in early 2010 after taking maternity leave. The jury agreed and determined that FremantleMedia North America and The Price is Right Productions owed her more than $8.5 million in all.

"I'm humbled. I'm shocked," Cochran said after the jury announced its verdict. "I'm happy that justice was served today not only for women in the entertainment industry, but women in the workplace."

FremantleMedia said it was standing by its previous statement, which said it expected to be "fully vindicated" after an appeal.

"We believe the verdict in this case was the result of a flawed process in which the court, among other things, refused to allow the jury to hear and consider that 40 percent of our models have been pregnant," and further "important" evidence, FremantleMedia said.

In their defense, producers said they were satisfied with the five models working on the show at the time Cochran sought to return.

Several other former models have sued the series and its longtime host, Bob Barker, who retired in 2007.

Most of the cases involving "Barker's Beauties" ? the nickname given the gown-wearing women who presented prizes to contestants ? ended with out-of-court settlements.

Comedian-actor Drew Carey followed Barker as the show's host.
