Richard's Real Estate and Urban Economics Blog: Maybe I am too ...

..I?expect to be smote down for saying it, but I think the two month old, mediocre, Case-Shiller number that came out today is consistent with the idea that the housing market will really come back big this year (I said so in the paper and on the radio today, so I might as well say it here).

Inventories in many hard hit markets are now low by historical standards. ?Time on market has fallen. ?HARP II can accelerate amortization (which is its most important feature). ?Prices are really cheap, both when the user cost they produce is compared with rent, and when compared with incomes (by World standards).

PHILIPPINES: Proudly ?Pinoy? Views on Attachment Parenting ...

Photo of the author and her then 5-month old son

I won?t go into the old news that is Time?s controversial ?mom enough? mid-May issue. We all know they sold enough copies on that matter.

Instead, I wanted to share some views on attachment parenting and breastfeeding expressed by fellow Filipino moms.

To begin, let me say that I am a babywearing,?formerly nursing mom (my son recently weaned?after being breastfed for two years and six months). In fact, here?s a photo of me a year and a half ago, when my son was just five months old.

Here in the Philippines, we are not new to the concept of babywearing and breastfeeding.

Velvet?Escario?Roxas, a breastfeeding counselor and representative of Arugaan (ah-roo-ga-an), a non-governmental, WHO-funded organization that conducts breastfeeding training for the Philippine Department of Health, gave a good picture of this when she posted a recent ?Facebook status update on the fan page of the popular breastfeeding blog, Chronicles of a Nursing Mom:

?Our Pinoy [colloquialism for "Filipino] ancestors have been doing these things since the beginning of time. We call it the Filipino way of living or raising of children. They on the other hand modernized it and called it attachment parenting. Look at the indigenous folks of the mountain provinces.

Photo courtesy of Francisco Guerrero Photography, from The Painters? Wife blog.

They breastfeed their children to 7 years, co-sleep with their kids, use the baby slings (to feed, to protect the children from rice field snakes/rats etc). I have so much respect for our ancestors ? of their wisdom and knowledge and most especially on the care for infants/children.?

I try to be a good mom. I decided to become a work-at-home mom not because I believe that every mom should work from home so that she can care for her kid, but because?for me, this is what works.?I do not discount those women who choose to hold full-time jobs outside the home; in fact, I admire them for being able to do what I myself was not able to to effectively. I breastfed for a total of two years and six months, which I am?hugely?proud of. I know of other women who?ve worked full-time and have managed to raise happy, healthy and whole kids. ?The point is: We, as parents, will instinctively desire to be the best parents that we can be for our children.?Neva Santos of the popular parenting blog, Manila Mommy, summarizes this very well:

The [attachment parenting] style is instinctive. Not to trivialize how hard parenting is, but sometimes listening to your gut is the best, right? Follow your intuition, I say. But even with the emphasis on [attachment parenting] in discussions as a result of the Time cover, it also got people talking on other parenting styles and the only conclusion to all that talk is that?there is no one type that works for parents and children. Heck for different kids in the same family, different styles could? work.

Indeed. In the end, the only parenting ?style? that works is one that is grounded on love. Parents work hard to be the best providers, caregivers and educators they can for their kids. The end result ? the so called ?success? of one?s parenting ? is relative. ?Fellow blogger, breastfeeding, babywearing and attachment parenting advocate?(and also a friend), Eliza Santiago-Ypon of The Painters? Wife, was interviewed by a local broadsheet regarding her views on this matter, and she does a great job of encapsulating the fact that breastfeeding, in particular, is not the measure of success of a healthy family:

?No one should be made to feel they?re less if they don?t breastfeed. As a breastfeeding advocate, I will always try to promote breastfeeding and its benefits to anyone I meet, but at the end of the day, we?re all just trying to be good parents. I?ve met some who express regret and guilt that they didn?t breastfeed but have learned to move past it. They have great, healthy children. No one should make them feel they didn?t do the best they could.?

I don?t have much to add to what these ladies have said. ?I just wanted to say that, as moms, we?re not competing for a medal or honor or accolade.?We?re all part of one, big, global community, and we look out for our families based on what works for our families. The choices that make up my definition of parenting are what?work for me ? and that?s fine. I?m not a 100 percent attachment parenting practitioner, and I don?t intend to be, but this doesn?t make me any less of a successful mom.?Ultimately, I am beholden to my child for one thing only, and that is to love him wholly, unconditionally.

Whether people agree with my version of parenting or not, is fine. Just don?t ask me if I am ?mom enough?? because I will tell you?I am not just enough, I?m the only mom who can love my kid the way I can.

Joel Reynolds: Surprise, Surprise: Pebble Mine Partnership Immediately Attacks EPA's Bristol Bay Watershed Assessment

You may have heard that, after 15 months of study, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency last week released in draft for public comment its Bristol Bay Watershed Assessment, characterizing the natural resources in the region and documenting the potential impacts on those resources of large-scale mining, like the proposed Pebble Mine.

EPA's action is big news.

But you may not have heard the cries of anguish from the mining consortium behind the Pebble Mine, a reaction grounded more, one suspects, in the consortium's desire to enrich its shareholders by mining Alaska's minerals than in a fair review of the EPA Assessment. No surprise there. Using words like "rushed," "inadequate," and "premature," the Pebble Limited Partnership immediately attacked the Watershed Assessment as an "EPA overreach" with "negative economic implications" not just for the region but for all of Alaska.

Never mind that EPA's Assessment is a scientific document and carries no regulatory mandate. In fact, the Pebble Partnership's apparent notion that science undertaken by someone other than the Pebble Partnership is considered an "overreach" and a threat to the economic viability of the project speaks volumes about the project itself -- and about the questionable quality, objectivity, and reliability of the Pebble Partnership's own "science."

Never mind the economic implications if EPA were to ignore the project's risks to one of the world's most productive wild salmon fisheries and the communities that depend on it -- in other words, if EPA were to ignore its legal duty under the federal Clean Water Act. (See NRDC's legal brief to EPA.) The economic consequences of contaminating the Bristol Bay commercial, recreational, and subsistence fisheries would be staggering.

Never mind that the demand for EPA review came from the overwhelming majority of residents of the Bristol Bay region, including Native communities, the region's largest developer the Bristol Bay Native Corporation and its 9,000 shareholders, and the Bristol Bay Native Association representing the region's federally recognized tribes, supported by a wide and diverse range of interests, from commercial, recreational, and subsistence fishermen to hunters and conservationists and elected officials, including the current President of the Alaska Senate Gary Stevens and members of the U.S. Senate. Public opinion polls show that over 80 percent of the region's residents support EPA's review and oppose the Pebble Mine.

And never mind the self-interest of the foreign mining companies in seeking to defer or avoid scrutiny of the Pebble Mine for as long as possible as they advance a scheme that would generate billions of tons of mining waste (laced with toxins), to be stored FOREVER in a massive tailings pond sitting at the head of the Bristol Bay watershed. Of course, they say, they would never proceed if there is a significant risk to the salmon. But there is nothing they can do to eliminate the risk of large-scale mining at this location, no matter the cost of their environmental review or the number of mitigating conditions. And, in any case, it is inevitably the people of the Bristol Bay region who will be left to co-exist with the risk -- and with the toxic waste.

According to EPA scientists, if something goes wrong, the salmon, other fish species, and their habitat will be devastated. Even if nothing goes wrong -- a virtual impossibility if past large-scale mining experience is any guide -- EPA concludes that the impact on the salmon and their habitat will be widespread and irreparable. And it is this assessment, based on the best scientific expertise EPA can muster, that the Pebble Partnership would prefer the public never hear.

The Pebble Mine is a project that must be stopped, not because of a categorical opposition to mining and not because of some presumed ill will by Pebble's proponents. Indeed, the Pebble Partnership and its CEO John Shively may be sincere in their commitment to build a state-of-the-art mine if they get the chance. The Pebble Mine must be stopped because, as one Anglo-American executive conceded when I met with her in London, "mining is a dangerous business," even under the best of circumstances -- and it must not be allowed at the headwaters of Bristol Bay. The problem, as former Alaska Senate President Rick Halford has said, is this mine in this place.

We shouldn't gamble what we can't afford to lose, and we can't afford to lose the Bristol Bay fishery. Period.

EPA deserves credit, not criticism. Its carefully crafted, science-based Watershed Assessment confirms the significant risk and unavoidable impacts of the Pebble Mine -- which is precisely why it's already been attacked by the Pebble Partnership.

Gain What You Want From Life with EFT Tapping-1 | Acupuncture ...

EFT great quantity ? Gain what you need From Life with EFT Tapping
Almost everybody wants positive things in their life. It is a primary reason why the world is filled with things like self-Help training, Platforms, Positive life coaching tutorials, Affirmations and a host of other techniques and systems for creating anything from weight loss to monetary prosperity. Though, For some people regardless they do they seem to fall short of the ideal perfectly positive life where everything flows and is right with the world.
For individuals not experienced the joys of a fully positive life and who perhaps constantly deal with a barrage of Why Me or perhaps feel as if they are constantly at odds with the world having to fight for every bit of positive outcome EFT Tapping may help to provide a unique solution. People often do not realize how much they ignore when emotions. They cave to the provocations of society and control anything, Which doesn?t always conform. As a result of, The emotions gain a physical current expression negative mental and emotional symptoms, Which is less than optimal for creating an effective and abundant life.
EFT Tapping is one way to help create the space necessary to obtain a designed outcome. The basis behind tapping and EFT abundance is unpredictably simple. Most people be familiar with acupuncture. The concept behind this different medicinal practice is that there is energy flowing through the body, Illness is the result of block in the flow of that energy. In acupuncture needles are used and graded at the meridian points of the body. This practice was compiled to, The theory is that, Break up the actual block and allow the power of the body to flow freely. Freely flowing energy means many people or reduction of symptoms caused by illness.
EFT abundance practices and EFT Tapping techniques are created to work similarly to acupuncture, With out the needles. Tapping is a lot more hitting pressure points randomly with fingers in order to help facilitate the breaking of negative energy and allow the body to rebalance itself. Tapping is often used for some other self-Help techniques such as statements and affirmations.
When a beginning practitioner is in the primary stages of learning tapping the first things discussed and taught is observation. When an individual who is looking to bring abundance or prosperity into their lives says an affirmation or writes out a goal; If they truly believe that it is achievable to achieve this goal, Then emotionally there isn?t any flinching. What is also not heard is the small voice at the back of the mind, Which speaks up and says maybe not worthy or the goal is unattainable for them.
One of the basic principles of tapping is acceptance. In order to move on from a particular emotional event and deal with those emotions without permitting them to affect the outcome of a situation a practitioner must first look at, Acknowledge and then choose to move on from this thoughts and emotions being generated. While touching EFT Tapping, A practitioner looks for the mental flinch that serve negative emotions responding to a positively desired outcome.
When the flinch occurs the practitioner or healthcare provider focuses on why allowing thoughts and feelings to emerge. They acknowledge these feelings and thoughts by providing them with voice either in their heads or aloud while tapping on specific points. They always add a positive spin. An example would be setting a goal and have that flinch say it isn?t feasible. While tapping the practitioner would list all the things which would make the goal impossible to reach giving voice to the negative while ending the statement with one indicating the desire to change and willingness to release the negative.
With EFT abundance associated with pension transfer affirmations or positive focus thoughts the process is done three times on average. This helps to bolster the new thoughts and counteract the old negative patterns. Often these patterns and system is set from childhood.

African refugees in Israel get a cold shoulder and worse

TEL AVIV ? The first Molotov cocktail ignited a backyard fence, just a couple of feet from where three Eritrean refugees were sleeping outdoors on makeshift beds of wood planks atop old TV sets. One man burned his arm trying to extinguish the flames with a blanket.

Moments later, a second firebomb was tossed through an open air vent into the adjacent apartment, where another family of African asylum-seekers was sleeping. It exploded in the shower without causing injury.

The post-midnight attacks last month by unknown assailants continued across Tel Aviv's dilapidated Shapira neighborhood, striking another refugee house and a kindergarten catering to African children.

"We're just looking for some peace in our life," said Berhun Gergrehra, 60, a former Eritrean soldier who fled poverty and repression there two years ago, arriving in Israel after walking through Sudan and Egypt with his teenage son and daughter. "But everyone here just hates us. Why?"

Israel is a nation founded by refugees, mostly Jews escaping persecution in Europe and the Middle East. It grew and prospered thanks to additional immigration from Russia, Ethiopia and other nations.

But now Israel's identity as a refuge is being challenged by an influx of tens of thousands of Africans, who also see the country as a haven from oppression in their native lands. Since 2006, more than 60,000 Africans ? mostly from Eritrea and Sudan, including the latter's Darfur region ? have poured over the border from Egypt's Sinai desert, taking advantage of Israel's proximity as one of the nearest modern democracies accessible to African refugees.

But unlike past waves of Jewish immigrants, the flood of Africans is triggering an ugly and sometimes violent backlash in Israel. Refugee activists say some government leaders are fostering the intolerance and anger toward Africans, who are accused of committing crimes, stealing jobs from Israelis and potentially undermining the Jewish character of the country.

At a Tel Aviv rally last week, hundreds of Israelis gathered to protest the presence of African refugees. Right-wing lawmaker Miri Regev called Sudanese arrivals a "cancer" on Israel and urged immigration officials to deport all African "infiltrators."

Soon after, angry mobs rioted through the neighborhood, smashing store windows and attacking a car carrying Africans, police said. Seventeen rioters, mostly minors, were arrested.

It was the latest in a string of attacks, disturbances and incidents of harassment in the last month, after three Eritrean migrants were arrested in connection with the rape of an Israeli woman.

Amid a national uproar over the rape, Interior Minster Eli Yishai called most African immigrants "criminals" and vowed to either deport or jail them. He said on Israel Radio that a firm response was the only way to discourage more refugees from entering the country. "Once they're in jail, they won't want to come over here anymore," he said.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu echoed the sentiment, saying the presence of African migrants in Israel "is extremely serious and threatens Israel's social fabric and national security."

Most of the African refugees walk into Israel via the Sinai desert, paying Bedouin smugglers thousands of dollars to deliver them from Egypt. In response, the Israeli government has begun construction of a massive fence along the border and an 8,000-bed detention facility in the southern Negev desert to hold those who get through. Both are expected to be completed this year.

After a brief detention at a military facility, most African refugees are released without government assistance and are given short-term visas that prohibit them from working. Many end up homeless in the resort city of Eilat or in the poor areas of cities like Tel Aviv, where they sleep in parks and seek jobs as construction workers or dishwashers, for which they are paid under the table. Children are allowed to attend school, but their parents receive no health insurance or other social benefits.

Interior Ministry officials say they are doing their best to deal with the influx, their goal being to provide basic protection without offering so much that it will encourage more arrivals.

"There's a pull factor," said Daniel Solomon, a legal advisor for the ministry. "If the government gives them a sense of permanence, millions more in Africa might come."

Critics call the government's treatment coldhearted and say the recent tone is fueling hatred, racism and xenophobia. In Eilat over the last month, there's been an increase in reports of Africans being pelted with rocks or doused with white paint.

Aid groups that have come to the defense of refugees say they, too, are coming under attack, receiving anonymous death threats.

"It's a frightening situation," said Orit Rubin, social coordinator at Assaf, a Tel Aviv-based organization that assists asylum seekers. Rather than calming tension, she said, government leaders are demonizing refugees, perhaps in an attempt to deflect attention from what she said is the government's failure to cope with the influx.

Samsung Galaxy One Tablet Features a Projector, Runs Windows 8?Loading ... Samsung has a projector phone or two in its portofolio, but what about tablets with projectors? That hasn?t been done by any company as far as I know, so the market is open. Laura Hong and Charles de Belizal envisioned a projector tablet and called it the Samsung Galaxy One, that you can see below.

Samsung Galaxy One Tablet Features a Projector, Runs Windows 8

This device measures 14mm in thickness, packs a projector, Windows 8, an aluminum body and brushed aluminum feet. The Galaxy One has two ?feet?, that help prop it up in media viewing position if you want to watch movies and also prepare it to project data during a business meeting, for example. It has a great projection angle and the projector is incorporated right above the camera sensor, that also includes a flash. A stylus is also in the mix and the Metro UI seems to fit right in with this Samsung tablet concept.

The virtual QWERTY keyboard also looks comfortable and I guess it?s part of the design, since it doesn?t resemble the standard input method in Windows 8. From what I can see here, the projector can rotate depending on the position you want it to assume, while using the tablet to show stuff at a meeting. The stylus is small and discrete and also reminds me of the S Pen a bit. Since this is a Windows 8 machine I imagine it would cost quite a bit? how much would you spend for it?

(AP) ? Gruesome video Saturday showed rows of dead Syrian children lying in a mosque in bloody shorts and T-shirts with gaping head wounds, haunting images of what activists called one of the deadliest regime attacks yet in Syria's 14-month-old uprising.

The assault on Houla, a group of villages northwest of the central city of Homs, killed more than 90 people, including at least 32 children under the age of 10, the head of the U.N. observer team in Syria said.

The attacks sparked outrage among international leaders and anti-regime groups and large protests in Syria, including the suburbs of the capital of Damascus and its largest city, Aleppo. It also renewed fears of the relevance of a month-old international peace plan that has not stopped almost daily violence.

More than a dozen amateur videos posted online Saturday gave glimpses of the carnage, showing lines of bodies laid out in simple rooms, many with bloody faces, torsos and limbs. In some places, residents put hunks of ice on the bodies to preserve them until burial.

One two-minute video shows at least a dozen children lined up shoulder to shoulder on a checkered blanket on what appears to be the floor of a mosque. Blood trickled from one girl's mouth. One boy, appearing to be no more than 8, had his jaw blown off. The video shows flowered blankets and rugs covering several rows of other bodies.

Another video posted Saturday showed a mass grave, four bodies wide and dozens of meters (yards) long.

Activists from Houla said Saturday that regime forces peppered the area with mortars after large demonstrations against the regime of President Bashar Assad the day before. That evening, they said, pro-regime fighters known as shabiha stormed the villages, gunning down men in the streets and stabbing women and children in their homes.

A local activist reached via Skype said regime forces fired shells at Houla, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) northwest of Homs. The shabiha entered the villages, raiding homes and shooting at civilians, Abu Yazan said. More than 100 people were killed, more than 40 of them children and most of them in the village of Taldaw, he said. Many had stab wounds, another activist said.

"They killed entire families, from parents on down to children, but they focused on the children," Yazan said.

The Syrian government blamed the killings on "armed terrorist groups" ? a term it often uses for the opposition ? but provided no details or death toll.

U.N. observers, among more than 250 who were dispatched in recent weeks to salvage the cease-fire plan, visited the site of the killings Saturday, finding spent artillery tank shells. The head of the team. Maj. Gen. Robert Mood, called the attack a "brutal tragedy."

"Whoever started, whoever responded, and whoever carried out this deplorable act of violence, should be held responsible," Mood said.

The attack is yet another blow to the international peace plan brokered by envoy Kofi Annan and cast a pall over his coming visit to check on the plan's progress. The cease-fire between forces loyal to the regime of Assad and rebels seeking to topple it was supposed to start on April 12 but has never really taken hold, with new killings every day.

The U.N. put the death toll weeks ago at more than 9,000. Hundreds have been killed since.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Friday that there has only been "small progress" on implementing the peace plan and blamed the Syrian government for much of the "unacceptable levels of violence and abuses." Annan is supposed to visit Syria soon to check on the plan's progress.

The grisly images were condemned by anti-regime groups and political leaders around the world.

"With these new crimes, this murderous regime pushes Syria further into horror and threatens regional stability," French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said in a statement Saturday.

The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights released an unusually harsh statement, saying Arab nations and the international community were "partners" in the killing "because of their silence about the massacres that the Syrian regime has committed."

The Houla villages are Sunni Muslim. The forces came from an arc of nearby villages populated by Alawites, members of the offshoot of Shiite Islam to which Assad belongs, the activists said.

The activists said the Houla killings appeared to be sectarian between the two groups, raising fears that Syria's uprising, which started in March 2011 with protests calling for political reform, is edging closer to the type of war that tore apart Syria's eastern neighbor, Iraq.

"I don't like to talk about sectarianism, but it was clear that this was sectarian hatred," said activist Abu Walid.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 96 people were killed, 26 of them children and four of them army defectors.

The group's head, Rami Abdul-Rahman, who relies on activists inside Syria, said all were killed in shelling, but that no forces entered Houla.

Syrian state TV condemned the opposition groups for the "massacre" in a statement Saturday.

"The armed groups are escalating their massacres against the Syrian people only days before international envoy Kofi Annan's visit in a bid to defeat his plan and a political solution to the crisis and with the aim of exploiting the blood of Syrians in the media bazar," it said.

The videos could not be independently verified. The Syrian government bars most media from operating inside the country.

The harsh condemnation from anti-regime groups reflects their growing frustration with international reluctance to intervene in Syria's conflict.

World powers have fallen in behind the U.N. plan. The U.S. and European nations say they will not intervene militarily, and while Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Libya have said they will arm Syria's rebels, no country is known to be doing so.

A spokeswoman for the opposition Syrian National Council called on the U.N. Security Council "to examine the situation in Houla and to determine the responsibility of the United Nations in the face of such mass killings, expulsions and forced migration from entire neighborhoods."

Also Saturday, the story of 11 Lebanese Shiites who were reported kidnapped in Syria this week took another strange turn.

Lebanese officials first said their expected arrival on a plane from Turkey to Lebanon late Friday was delayed for "logistical reasons."

On Saturday, Turkey's Foreign Ministry denied the men were in Turkey ? raising new questions about their fate.

Lebanese and Syrian officials blamed Syrian rebels for Tuesday's kidnapping. No group has claimed responsibility.

Breast Implants Sydney

Over the past few days I have been answering a few phone calls that all seem the same to me. Why are we so affordable? What types of implants do you use?

Enhance Clinic only charges $6,999 for a Breast Implants Sydney no matter what type of implants you decide to have or what size they are. Our competitors charge anywhere from $9,000 - $15,000 - What a huge difference ! Ladies the reason why we are so affordable is so that you can have the breasts you have always dreamed about. Enhance Clinic wants YOU to be able to afford to have your breast done and if you cant afford $6,999 then you have a choice to pay off your procedure after you have had it.

If you are unsure of what type of implant you would like below are the advantages of Saline and Silicone implants...

Saline Advantages
-Scarring is smaller, even with larger size implants.
-Rupture is revealed immediately.
-Less pain for recovery.
-Cost less than Silicone implants.
-Saline breast implants are available to women age 18 and older for breast augmentation, or women of any age for breast reconstruction.
-Leaking saline solution will be absorbed by your body without posing any health risks.

Saline Disadvantages
-Sometimes the feeling of saline movement can be experienced.
-If a saline breast implant ruptures, the implant will deflate ? causing the affected breast to change in size and shape.
-Complication of infection inside the implant during filling.
-Some people can experience change in temperature of the breast implant depending on the season.

Silicone Advantages
-Leakage of silicone gel is not so common.
-There is no sound phenomenon by moving.
-Less movement of content.
-Gel feels more like breast tissue.
-A ruptured silicone breast implant may eventually cause breast pain or changes in the contour or shape of the breast.

Silicone Disadvantages
-It is more difficult to diagnose a rupture.
-The price can be up to 50% higher.
-Silicone implants can form inflammatory granulomas by leakage of gel and even the nodes can be affected.
-The scar is bigger, especially with larger size implants.

After reading the advantages and disadvantages I would feel much safer going with a Saline implant rather than Silicone.

To me it just seems a lot safer. Enhance Clinic also prefer to do Saline implants.

Why the Dow Finished Higher This Week, and Facebook Didn't

It was an interesting week for the Dow Jones Industrial Average (INDEX: ^DJI??) , which ebbed and flowed over the past five trading days to finish slightly in the black for the week. To no one's surprise, Europe was a main catalyst as investors continue to fear that Greek elections scheduled for June 17 could further push the country toward a euro exit. Contagion is a main part of the problem; the possibility of Greece leaving the euro has investors concerned about implications for larger European countries like Spain and Italy.

But it wasn't all bad news on the week, as some upbeat reports about the state of the U.S. economy helped overshadow problems in Europe. The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index rose to 79.3 in May from 76.4 in April, showing that consumers are the most confident they've been about the economy since October 2007. A couple of upbeat housing reports also helped push markets up this week; new home sales increased more than expected in April and housing prices improved as well.

Here's how the three major indices performed over the past five trading days:

Index

Change

Ending Value

Dow Jones Industrial Average +85.45 [0.69%] 12,454.83
Nasdaq +58.74[2.11%] 2,837.53
S&P 500 +22.6 [1.74%] 1,317.82

Turning to individual stocks, Home Depot (NYSE: HD??) was the Dow's largest gainer this week, finishing up 5.1%. The positive housing data certainly helped the home improvement retailer, as did a disappointing earnings report from main rival Lowe's. Home Depot has impressed investors by taking market share and growing same-store sales faster than Lowe's.

PC giant Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ??) was the third-biggest Dow gainer this week, up 4.1%, pushed higher after the company posted solid earnings and announced a massive restructuring program. HP reported non-GAAP earnings per share of $0.98, beating analyst estimates of $0.91. But it seems investors were most optimistic about the prospect of huge cost savings and increased organic growth at the company, as HP announced it would save $3 billion to $3.5 billion in fiscal year 2014 by eliminating 27,000 jobs.

Pfizer (NYSE: PFE??) was the Dow's biggest decliner this week, dropping 1.9%. The company announced Thursday that a U.S. health advisory panel had issued a split vote on a Pfizer drug designed to treat a rare neurodegenerative disease. Still, the pharmaceutical giant has slightly outperformed the Dow year-to-date, up 2.3%.

Outside the Dow, Facebook (Nasdaq: FB??) continues to capture investors' interest. The social-networking giant finished the week down 10.2%, but was able to rally midweek after dropping 11% on Monday. There remain serious questions about the company and its underwriters' handling of its IPO, leading financial regulators to announce that they will review the circumstances surrounding the botched IPO. There have been reports that analysts at the group of investment banks bringing the company public lowered estimates of Facebook's future revenue before the offering, and didn't disclose the information to the public. Facebook's stock has now declined 16.5% since the company went public last Friday.

Even beyond the terrible handling of its IPO, Facebook is facing some serious questions about its long-term prospects. Chief among them is the fact that the Internet advertising-based business model is a difficult one, and Facebook continues to struggle to make money off its mobile platform. That's why we've created a new report, "Forget Facebook -- Here's the Tech IPO You Should Be Buying," which details a much better social-media stock that has a longer runway for growth than Facebook. The report won't be available forever, so?click here to get access today -- it's totally free.

Vatican confirms pope's butler arrested in scandal

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? The Vatican has confirmed that the pope's butler was arrested in an embarrassing leaks scandal.

Spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi on Saturday said Paolo Gabriele was arrested in his home inside Vatican City with secret documents in his possession. Gabriele, a layman, was being held.

Vatican documents leaked to the press in recent months have pointed to power struggles and accusations of corruption touching senior Vatican cardinals. In one case, a cleric who complained was reportedly sent to Washington as papal envoy to get him out of the Vatican.

In another case, Vatican officials have accused the president of the Vatican bank of leaking confidential documents. He was ousted by the board Thursday.

Game On: Irish Immigrants Head to the Bronx to Play Gaelic Football

No matter how bad the traffic is, John Riordan drives from his home in South Brooklyn to Gaelic Park in the Bronx almost every weekend. He?s been making the trip for the past 48 years because of a sport that he cherishes: Gaelic football. The high intensity sport that?s parts rugby, soccer and football is as Irish as his County Kerry roots.

?It?s part of us, passed down to us,? said Riordan, who moved to New York from Ireland in 1964.

Riordan is one of hundreds of Irish immigrants in the city who watch and play Gaelic football in the park, which is a patch of green on W. 240th Street across from Van Cortland Park. Besides playing the sport, Riordan has also coached and managed the Kerry team for the Gaelic Athletic Association of Greater New York (GAA). The association, which now encompasses about 100 Gaelic football teams, was formed in 1914 to coordinate and promote sports central to Irish heritage, like Gaelic football and hurling.

Two teams of 15 players each are required to play a game of Gaelic football. As in soccer, each team attempts to score points by kicking the ball into the opponent?s goal. Teams can also score by lobbing the ball between parallel posts atop the goals like scoring a field goal in American football. Athletes use their feet and hands to handle the ball.

Many New York City Gaelic football players say that they began playing the sport back in their home country when they were six or seven years old.

?You grow up playing football in Kerry,? said Niall Moran, 29, the current manager of the city?s County Kerry team. ?If you didn?t you were a weirdo.?

Moran immigrated to the U.S. when he was 24 years old and played with the league for four years before becoming a manager. He works construction during the week and commutes to Gaelic Park from Westchester County for practice games and matches.

The city?s John Riordan, right, has been a fixture at Gaelic Park for over forty years. Photo by Denise Blostein.Gaelic football league players, coaches, managers, referees and coordinators are all volunteers. The same holds true in Ireland, although there Gaelic football tournaments draw tens of thousands of spectators, according to Liam Bermingham, 48, who is chairman of the New York Gaelic Athletic Association.

?They all have to go to work the next day,? said Bermingham. ?The whole ethos of the whole GAA is that it?s a volunteer organization.?

Photo by Denise Blostein. John Riordan, right, has been a fixture at Gaelic Park for over 40 years.

As in Ireland, there?s also a healthy dose of rivalry between clubs in the New York City Gaelic football league, many of which are named after counties in Ireland. Matches between the Kerry, Cork, Armagh and Tyrone teams can stir up as much tension as a Yankees versus Red Sox game.

?The rivalry travels, believe me,? said Bermingham, who moved to Manhattan from Ireland when he was 20. ?I think it?s built into your psyche." He adds that there?s no shortage of eager Gaelic football players due to the continuing waves of young Irish immigrants coming to New York.

While most of the Gaelic football league consists of men?s teams, a women?s division has been active in New York since 1991. Rosie O?Reilly, 38, who immigrated to the U.S. when she was 17, plays for the Cavan team. Though she often heads to work at 7 a.m. and doesn?t get home until after 10 p.m. ? she?s a personal trainer and bartender -- she wouldn?t have it any other way.?

?We all become one big family,? she said. ?We may fall out every now and again over a game but generally, the social aspect of it is great.?

Bermingham agrees that being part of the Gaelic football association has its benefits off the field.

?That?s where you got your first job, that?s where you met your wife, where your family ended up?? he said. ?If you want to congregate where Irish people are going, Gaelic Park has been the mecca.?

The league has also expanded over the years, and now has a division for players under 20. Moran, the coach of the Kerry team, estimated that one club based in Queens, the Shannon Gaels, has about 400 young male and female players. In the future, the association hopes to get Gaelic football established in area school systems, too, although Riordan admits that?s a long-term goal.

?The kids have a choice of so many other sports, and other sports enable kids to get a scholarship,? he said.

But with more and more young Irish players joining the league, Bermingham hopes they?ll get there.

?It?s really a game you have to see,? he said. ?It?s very difficult to describe the game, describe the excitement and what it actually means to people.?

The Gaelic football league plays at Gaelic Park each Saturday and Sunday afternoon from spring through fall. Click here to see a map of the park and check out photos of league players in action in this slideshow.

Android app shames parking jerks in real time

1 hr.

Inconsiderate parking is a universal problem. Curb-climbing SUVS, sports cars angled across the lines, double-parked delivery trucks and motorists with no personal boundaries, leaving you little room to get in your car, or pull out of the spot,?are everywhere. Now, a Russian online newspaper is attempting to remedy the rudeness ? at least in its corner of the world.

Parking Douche, an Android app developed by The?Village, invites irritated Android users to upload plate numbers and?photos of poorly parked cars.

People online?nearby are served with a?pop-up ad?on The Village news?website?that show which jerks have parked where, and just?how egregiously they have abused the social contract.

"The data is streamed live through an IP address, so (only) people who live or work near the locations where the car was parked see it," the video goes on to explain. And, it seems, the only way the online witness can dismiss the pop-up is by sharing the car's info on social media such as Facebook.

But the description for Parking Douche and the video fail to mention the Android app's major flaw: It's only available in Moscow.

"Please make it for other countries!," wrote one commenter on the app's page in the?Google Play store.

Right?!

OK, so there's a few Big Brother aspects that make such an app problematic. Posting the plate and location of someone else's car on a local Web newspaper, let alone Facebook, is more than a little privacy invasive.

Then there are the harassment possibilities, as the entire goal of this product is to humiliate someone publicly. It's not clear how much due diligence this app can do, screening for proper?jerks rather than just?reporting the perfectly parked car of someone that an app user just really wants to annoy. ?

Still ... wildly problematic?privacy?heebie jeebies?aside, the applications for a?viable real time shaming technology available to with a smartphone are astronomical! Think how awesome the world could be if could humiliate the world out of:

  • Jerks who use their cellphones in movie theaters!?
  • Jerks uses the escalator as a phone booth ... for their cellphones!
  • Jerks who text while they're in my way.
  • That one dude?who uses the sidewalk in front of my building to do push ups in?between sprints.
  • Jerks who use cellphone apps to complain about other people!?
Working together, we could?shame the whole planet into polite compliance. As the Parking Douche video claims,?"Thanks to this naming and shaming campaign, more and more people are now caring about where and how they park." ?Alas, whether you're for or against such humiliation campaigns, the app's video provides no imperial data is provided to back up that claim.?

Obama is ahead in swing states, but his lead narrows

(Kristoffer Tripplaar-Pool/Getty Images)President Barack Obama leads Mitt Romney in Florida, Ohio and Virginia, according to new polls of the key 2012 swing states, although Obama's advantage has narrowed in recent months.

Obama leads Romney 48 percent to 44 percent in both Florida and Virginia, according to three new NBC News/Marist polls. In Ohio, the president has a 6-point advantage over Romney, leading his Republican rival 48 percent to 42 percent among registered voters in the state. (The polls have a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.)

Despite the good news, there are signs of danger for the Obama campaign. In March, the same polls found Obama with a 12-point lead over Romney in Ohio and a 17-point lead in Virginia. In January, the poll had Obama besting Romney by 8 points in Florida.

A few key findings benefit Obama. A majority of voters in all three states believe the "worst is behind us" when it comes to the economy, according to the polls?though less than 40 percent of voters think the economy will get better over the next year. Meanwhile, 57 percent of voters in Ohio and Virginia and 56 percent in Florida think Obama "inherited" the struggling economy?a finding that could test Romney's argument that Obama's policies made things worse for the country.

Yet Obama and Romney are statistically tied in all three states when it comes to the question of which candidate would best handle the economy. A plurality of voters in these states believe Romney is the best candidate to handle the national debt.

While Romney's numbers are on the rebound, the polls found one key hurdle for the presumptive Republican nominee: His favorability numbers continue to lag behind Obama's.

In Ohio and Virginia, Obama holds a 10-point advantage or more over Romney when it comes to the percentage of voters who hold a "favorable" impression of the candidate. In Florida, the margin is narrower, but voters are still statistically split on how they view Romney: 45 percent hold a favorable view, compared to 43 percent who hold an unfavorable one.
